Dasavatharam (2008): film

by venkateswarlu @ 2008-07-08 - 14:28:55

The story has the underlying themes of Chaos theory and chain of events. It begins with the 12th century with a conflict between the worshipers of two Gods namely Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The king being a Lord Shiva devotee decides to sink the Vishnu idol which is opposed by Rangarajan(kamal), a vishnu devotee. So the king ties rangarajan with the idol and drowns them in the sea.

The story propels forward to the current century, where a very harmful bio-chemical weapon is invented in the United States for defense purposes. However, following a hazardous leak, Govindarajan (the protagonist, played again by Kamal), decides to prevent it from being used. There are people who are not happy with this decision, and decide to stop him by hiring an Ex-CIA assassin Christian Fletcher (Again, Kamal). The Virus somehow lands in a cargo shipment that is on its way to Chennai, India. Govindrajan and Fletcher race to the other end of the world, in a bid to conquer this vial. The rest of the movie is a cat and mouse game, into which many other characters (most played by Kamal himself, in keeping with the theme of the movie), are drawn.

The movie reaches a dramatic conclusion when the protagonist Govindarajan fails to stop the leakage of the virus (Fletcher consumes it and hence causes it to decay his body and spread onto the beach shore). This act would have destroyed a million lives, except that it is already established that the virus can be neutralized by pouring down tons and tons of NaCl.

The chaos theory takes control again, with Tsunami rocking the seashores of Chennai, one that brings with it tons of NaCl, courtesy the salty sea water. This miracle is linked to the incidents that occurred back in the 12th century (the god sunk in the sea centuries ago, although killing thousands saves the lives of millions in the form of Tsunami) conferring that everything happens for a reason and god exists. The ten roles Kamala Hasan plays in the movie are The hero/Scientist, Villan Ex-CIA assassin ,an old lady, the vishnu devotee, intellegence officer(indian), a muslim, a scheduled caste leader,a japanese martial arts guy, a punjabi pop singer and George Bush.

Love Story 2050: Film review

by venkateswarlu @ 2008-07-08 - 13:50:35

Love Story 2050
Cast: Harman Baweja, Priyanka Chopra, Boo Furry Teddy
Direction: Harry Baweja
Rating: *

Aspirins, tonics, syrups, head massage and bed rest might be advisable after viewing Harry Baweja’s Love Story 2050. If Mumbai in that year is likely to look, feel and sound the way it does here, you hope to be far away in the heavenly clouds. Or another planet.

Frankly, this lengthy sci-fi-fo-fum misadventure is sheer torture. In the near-empty auditorium, you even wanted to grab 2050 winks on the carpet whenever the not-so-special effects displayed a still-untampered with Gateway of India overlooking New York-style skyscrapers. And you thought the plan was to go Shanghai, not Big Apple.

Sky cars toodle along (hey, no traffic?), a tinny robot rolls Kathakali eyes, blue furry teddy Boo goes yoo hoo every morning. And Priyanka Chopra, in ripe plum hair, asks her room to be lit in a peachy pink hue. “Such a happeeee colour,” trills she.

Duper-superhero Harman Baweja combats aunties in wigs and bozos in Bruce Lee tunics to whisk Priyankaji back to a time machine – which has been invented by a hamming Boman Irani in a fright wig which must have required wool from an entire flock of sheep. Eeeps.

By the way, the future shock kababs are mainly served after the intermission. Till then you’re in Adelaide, Sydney, Toronto (not clear), watching Harman running-singing-dancing-woo-wooing Priyanka in hair that’s browner than chocolate. Fruit and nuts.

Anyway whether in ’08 or ’50, you just can’t summon up enough interest (forget caring) in this bhavishya bhookamp. Love or lulu lava, this?

Admittedly you do weep buckets-`n’-tubs because you see so much wasteful expenditure and so many junior artistes flashing silver-gold mascara. And you cry also because you want to coin a positive word or two for debutant Harman Baweja. Well.. umm.. uh.. he appears to be eager and hardworking.. but at times, looks as if he could also do with aspirins, tonics and syrups. Avoid this no-love-no-story.

Every sex worker having 10 male clients in Asia: report

by venkateswarlu @ 2008-07-08 - 13:44:54

Up to 10 million women in Asia sell sex and at least 75 million men pay for it regularly. With an estimated 10 male clients for every sex worker in Asia, men who go for unprotected commercial sex are probably the single most important determinant of the size of HIV epidemics in most of Asia, followed by sharing of contaminated needles and syringes and unprotected sex between men.

These were the findings of the Independent Commission on AIDS in Asia in its report, Redefining AIDS in Asia: Crafting an Effective Response, which was released by Prime Minister Manmohan Sigh on Monday. According to UNAIDS, an estimated 4.9 million Asians are currently infected with HIV. In 2007, 440,000 people were infected with HIV and 300,000 died of AIDS-related infections and diseases.

By pragmatically focusing prevention programmes to the sex trade and on drug use, the commission suggests that governments would make considerable progress in halting and reversing the epidemic. In most Asian countries, an increase in casual and premarital sex among women is unlikely to lead to a net increase in new infections, notes the commission, which is supported by UNAIDS.

India as had some successes. Though the country has 2.5 million people infected with HIV, which is over half of Asia's 4.9 million HIV population, effective initiatives such as condom promotion among sex workers, raising awareness, lowering stigma and making treatment accessible has slowed down new infections in some states such as Tamil Nadu.

Other Asian countries, however, are lagging behind in their response to AIDS. If countries do not change policies, HIV would infect 10 million Asians and claim 500,000 lives annually by 2020.

"Countries at the early stages of the epidemic needed to spend an average of 50 cents per capita to reverse the epidemic. Every dollar spent on early prevention would save $8 in treatment costs later. Yet, the money spent on HIV programmes from national budgets decreased over the past decade in the 23 countries surveyed, the only exceptions being India and China," said C Rangarajan, chairman of the nine-member commission and chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the PM.

Painting in the rain

by venkateswarlu @ 2008-07-08 - 13:37:37

There is a monsoon lull in the city's art galleries. The low sunlight and the clouds haven't affected the spirit of the artists though. Although, a few of them prefer the nippy winter, some regard the rainy season as the time to revitalise themselves.

Five celebrated artists discuss the weather, literally.

Akbar Padamsee
I fail to understand how a season can change one's perception on art. Art comes from within. It's an ongoing process. But yes, a change in climate always alters the state of mind which reflects on one's art. Personally, I prefer the cold climate.

Monsoon musings: Since my studio is located on one of the top floors of a building, the rains don't create havoc. It's well-lit, I do not face the problem of water clogging. But I have to take precautions to protect my oil paintings. I also cover my other equipment with silica gel. They generally catch fungus in the damp weather.

Lalitha Lajmi
Monsoon is a welcome change from the sweltering summer. However, winter is my favourite time to paint.

Monsoon art: When I think of the monsoons, I think of pahari paintings- these watercolours created centuries ago, have captured the finer nuances of the rain. To date, they serve as references.

Monsoon musings: The light is poor..and that discourages one from getting to the canvas.

Prabhakar Kolte
Of course, seasons do affect the mind..and therefore the canvas one creates.

Monsoon musings: When I was a professor at the JJ School of Art, I would tell my students to experience the rainy season- to go out, feel and observe the winds, the fresh water and smell the wet mud. Such an exercise is essential for art study. One must interpret nature on canvas, not merely represent it.

The rains can be a nuisance too. Like last year, my studio at Kandivli was severely affected. Fortunately, I had a solo show going on at Pundole..so there were only a few artworks at the studio.

Reena Saini-Kallat
I try to stay indoors with my notepad and sketches after the first showers. The fresh greenery is very inspiring. During the rains, the commuting is a big issue, so the temptation to go out is minimal. There are also fewer art exhibitions.. one can devote longer hours to work.

Monsoon art: I enjoy Claude Monet's impressions on monsoon. They have a misty feel. I created works on acrylic paper five years ago for a group show called Rain at the Sakshi Gallery.

Monsoon musings: My studio at Bandra is close to the sea, so my material is easily soiled.

Sunil Gawde
I don't view art as a seasonal fruit. Art is timeless.

Monsoon art: The art that I associate with this season is a sculpture, which I created five years ago for the group show Rain. It was a Maruti van windshield with a wipe.

Even though the monsoons can be gloomy, I must quote a verse from a poem I'd written: Black clouds…heavy rains…purani tapari….garam chai…old Hindi film songs..boiled egg..whisky ka peg…Asbestos chhappar…chhappar ke neeche chidiya kabootar is very inspiring.

UPA-Left alliance ends, Left withdraws support to Government

by venkateswarlu @ 2008-07-08 - 13:16:45

The four-year old ideologically incorrect alliance between the UPA and Left finally came to an end, as the Left Front announced withdrawal of support to the UPA government at the centre. Left took this decision after the Prime Minister ignored its plea on the Indo-US nuclear deal and decided to go to IAEA in order to proceed with the deal. The Left will formally withdraw support tomorrow and meet the President thereafter.

CPI(M)-led Left Front has 59 MPs in the parliament. Even though UPA has roped in Samajwadi Party, which has 39 MPs, it may still fall short of the magic number (272) to prove its majority. The Congress also got assurances from Ajit Singh's RLD and Maharashtra's RPI on the support to the government. But reports suggest that there are a few MPs in Samajwadi Party, who are against this alliance and may even revolt and join Mayawati's BSP. IT is very much clear that government will have a tough time over the next few days. BJP leader L K Advani has already dared the PM to prove his majority in the Parliament if Left withdraws support.

The Left has decided to put pressure on the President to ask the Prime Minister to seek a trust vote on the floor of the house in the wake of its withdrawal of support to the government. The sudden political development has put the government in a tight spot, as PM Dr. Manmohan Singh is in Japan to attend the G8 Summit.

Erectile dysfunction Problems with more sex

by venkateswarlu @ 2008-07-08 - 12:02:09

There's new advice for older men who want to preserve their sexual function: have sex, and have it often, researchers say.

In a study that followed nearly 1,000 older Finnish men for five years, researchers found that those who were regularly having sex at the start of the study were at lower risk of developing erectile dysfunction (ED) by the study's end.

In fact, the more often the men had sex, the lower their ED risk.

The implication, say the researchers, is that men should be encouraged to stay sexually active into their golden years.

Dr. Juha Koskimaki and colleagues at the University of Tampere in Finland report the findings in the American Journal of Medicine. The study included 989 men who were between the ages of 55 and 75 at the outset.

Overall, those who said they had sex less than once per week were twice as likely to develop ED over the next five years as men who had sex at least once a week. Furthermore, compared with men who had sex three or more times per week, their ED risk was increased nearly four-fold.

A number of factors contribute to ED development, many of which could also affect a man's sexually activity -- such as age, diabetes and heart disease. However, after taking account of those factors, sexual activity itself remained linked to ED risk, Koskimaki's team found.

It may be a matter of "use it or lose it," according to the researchers. Just as exercise boosts physical fitness, they note, regular sexual activity may help a man preserve his erectile function.

ED occurs when there are problems with blood flow to the penis. Regular sexual activity, Koskimaki's team writes, may help maintain healthy blood vessel function in the erectile tissue.

The lives of journalists

by venkateswarlu @ 2008-07-08 - 11:40:05

English actress Kate Beckinsale has revealed that she was surprised to see the similarities in the lives of journalists and the stars while preparing for her role in her upcoming film.

The 34-year-old actress plays a role of a reporter in new film 'Nothing But The Truth'. She had spent time with real-life Los Angeles Times writers to prepare for the role.

"I went to the LA Times to follow around some to the journalist girls there. I was so sure I would see all the different ways their jobs were so unlike mine, Contactmusic quoted the 'Underworld' actress as saying.

"I was more struck by the similarities.

"It's such a vocational profession where you're passionate about your work and you're married to another journalist, or someone who is passionate about journalism. It felt very similar," she added.
